VIC KANGAS biography in progress. Working title: NO COMPROMISES

CHAPTER 1--Vic’s love of motorsports began in the 50’s when he bought his first racecar for $15 and raced it at Brookline, NH, and Westboro, MA, Speedways with his uncle, Walter Heikkila, driving. They finished 2nd their first time at Westboro.

CHAPTER 3--Marty Harty, Yankee peddler and veteran racer, brought innovative chassis concepts learned in Europe when he was in the service, and he and Vic started building cars together in the 60’s. While building one for Ernie Gahan, Ernie called from Middletown, NY, Speedway. He was running for the championship and had crashed his coupe badly. Vic and Marty worked through the night and delivered the new racecar to Fonda Speedway. They unloaded it in the street and drove it onto the track just in time for the race. Ernie went on to win the National Modified Championship.

CHAPTER 5--Approached by Leo Charron to build a racecar for the Westboro circuit to be driven by Tinker Progin. Then built another car for Tinker and won the Hudson track championship.

CHAPTER 7--Ron Bouchard approached Vic to see if he thought he could build a car to race at Seekonk, MA. That started a long history of racing with Ron, starting with four championships at Seekonk.

CHAPTER 9--Vic accompanies Ron to Pocono to drive the Dick Armstrong modified. Won the qualifying race – his first time on a super speedway. Then on to Trenton where they finished 2nd to Geoff Bodine.

CHAPTER 11--Won Northeast Allstar Racing League Championship with Ken Bouchard driving. Won 1980 Thompson300 for Dick Armstrong with Ron Bouchard driving. Won the State of Maine Championship with George Summers driving. Worked with Bugsy Stevens, Pete Fiandaca, Gene Bergin and Ray Hendrick.

CHAPTER 14--Hired to Crew Chief 1982 Daytona Firecracker 400 Jack Beebe’s Winston Cup, Ron Bouchard driving. Finished 3rd, and Jack hired Vic. Then 8th in WC season points.

CHAPTER 17—Hired by Billy Dingman for his IMSA GTO and Winston Cup teams. Won the Miami and Columbus Grand Prix, won at Lime Rock, earned three top-five championships in three years. Had the opportunity to work with world class drivers: Al Unser, Sr., Greg Sacks and Tommy Riggins, Bob Earl, Steve Millen, Gene Felton, Craig Carter, Elliott Forbes-Robinson in races from Oregon to Florida, including the 12-hours of Sebring and the 24-hours of Daytona.

CHAPTER 19--From his Florida machine shop, Victory Fabricating and Machine, Vic built a Florida modified for New Smyrna, Buck Lashua driven by Leo Cleary.

CHAPTER 21--Joe Nemechek hired Vic as a consultant for his NASCAR Busch team. Finished 6th in BGN points. Joe then hired Vic as Crew Chief to go after the championship. Won 1992 Championship; Vic’s first full year in BGN.

CHAPTER 24--Vic now resides in Florida with his wife, Sandy. He runs a business from home marketing high-tech products that help people live better, and he operates a R-and-D machine shop for Bob Cassata’s Space Racers, whom he met while racing. He enjoys travel, his daughters and his grandchildren. He can often be seen at a New Smyrna Quarter Midget Racing Association function with young driver, Austin Howell.
